Because Mason County’s topography is dominantly undulating to very steep and is dissected by many small streams, its Prime Farmland is dispersed along the top of narrow ridges.
You can recreate this USDA map by following these steps with your web browser:
- Open Web Soil Survey.
- Set Area of Interest (AOI): Quick Navigation → State and County → Kentucky → Mason County → Set AOI.
- Go to Soil Data Explorer → Suitabilities and Limitations for Use → Land Classifications → Farmland Classification.
- Click View Rating to render the map for your AOI (legend shows “Prime farmland,” “Prime if drained,” “Farmland of statewide importance,” etc.).
- Click Shopping Cart (Free) → Check Out → Create PDF to download a cartographic map with legend and acreage tables. (Web Soil Survey is NRCS’s official source; its maps are derived from SSURGO.)
▶️ What “Prime Farmland” means: NRCS defines it as land with the best combination of physical/chemical properties for sustained high yields (with normal management). Variants include Prime if drained and Farmland of statewide importance.
